Dr. Tolety Janakiram born on 30th August 1962, completed B.Sc. (Ag) from erstwhile APAU, Hyderabad and M.Sc., Ph.D. in Horticulture with specialization in vegetable science from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. He served Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bangalore over 20 years and served as Head, Division of Floriculture and Landscaping at IARI, New Delhi during 2009-2014.He was actively involved in breeding flower crops and protected cultivation research in ICAR Network project and NATP. As an accomplished plant breeder at IIHR, Bangalore, Dr.Janakiram was responsible for the development and release of 6 China aster, 10 Chrysanthemum, 10 Gladiolus varieties and 4 hybrids of Tuberose and 5 gladiolus varieties and 5 chrysanthemum varieties at IARI, New Delhi. His research efforts have gained popularity through the wide spread adoption of the above varieties particularly in Andhrapradesh, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh. Some of these varieties were released at both state and central level. China aster varieties need special mention for their popularity gained in Andhra Pradesh with the support of the Netherlands assisted project APWELL. As a PG teacher, he taught courses in breeding flower crops in UAS, Bangalore and IARI, New Delhi and guided 2 Ph.D. and 8 MSc. Students at IIHR, Bengaluru and IARI. He was member, Academic Council, PG School, IARI. He is also responsible for introducing new courses on Specialty flowers and Planting material production in ornamental crops. |

He received advanced training in molecular biology, protected cultivation sponsored by Indian National Science Academy (INSA), German Scientific Foundation and MNSHAV Centre for International Cooperation Fellowship Programme, Israel. He is Member of Academic Council of the SKLTSHU University, Telangana, Member of Academic Council of the,PJTSAU University, Telangana, Board Member of UHS Bagalkot, Karnataka, Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the PPV&FRA,Member of Plant Germplasm Registration Committee NBPGR, New Delhi., Member, Central Variety Release Committee He is an active member of Vision Group for the development of floriculture in Karnataka, Floriculture unit recognition committee, APEDA, Asian Productivity council APO, Tokyo, General Secretary of Society for Promotion of Horticulture, Bangalore, , He served as an expert for horticulture in Farmers’ need assessment survey conducted by Agri-Biotech Foundation, Andhra Pradesh under the Netherlands Biotechnology Programme. He has served as nodal officer DUS testing in ornamental crops at IIHR, Bangalore. He was Secretary, Delhi Agri Horticulture Society, Indian Society of Ornamental Horticulture. He is the Registrar of International Registration Authority of Bougainvillea, IARI. He is Vice President of Indian Society of Ornamental Horticulture, Rose Society of India, New Delhi. He is Chief Editor of Journal of Ornamental Horticulture and Assistant Editor for Asian Journal of Horticulture Science and Karnataka Journal of Horticulture. . He is one of the members of Institute Management Committee and Research Advisory Committee in many ICAR institutes/directorates. He also acted as liaison officer for the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture and Focal point for SAARC meetings from India He has widely travelled in India and visited Germany, The Netherlands, China, Turkey, Israel, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan for advanced training/presentation of research findings. He is responsible for the establishment of exclusive laboratory on Value Addition of Ornamentals at IARI and initiating Turf research. He has outstandingly contributed to horticulture research and development in his career spanning 31 years with his distinguished academic record. He has an impressive record of 260 publications that include research papers, technical bulletins, books, book chapters etc. |
